Teaching Your Dog To Wait
Teaching your dog to wait is an easy but very useful command for him to know. This is the mothod I thought about and used and I found it very affective.
1. First you need to find a place where you can fill your dogs bowl and a sort of border where you can tell him to wait, for instance, I filled his bowl by the door and he was never allowed to pass the small ledge or I would stop and tell him to move back a bit.
2. Then, before you fill his bowl for any of his meals, call him and he will probably, after a while, know that it is food time. When you see him sprinting over to you, give the command wait. If he does not stop, put everything down and stop him from getting excited, hold him down slightly and tell him to wait. I find the best hand gesture to give to a dog to tell them to wait is to just put your hand flat, like you do when you tell people to wait when they can not hear you.
3. As you fill up his bowl keep an eye on him and make sure he dows not pass the imaginary line you have created. If he does so, just stop and say no firmly and then again give the command wait and enforce it over and over until he obeys. Never let him be the boss over you or he will never learn.
Gradually he will learn to wait when you feed him and you will then be able to give the command in other situations. After you know he has learnt, try it with some treats and give him praise and the treat but over time, only give him verbal praise.
Good luck on training your dog!
