Walking Off The Lead

Outdoor activities are great fun when your dog walks right by your side. It can be a lot easier to train your dog to heel off the lead at first as he/she will love following you and will love human companionship. Since most puppies love following the scent of food, it is best to carry around some treats to reward it with.

Here are a few steps on how you can train your dog to heel next to you and walk without a lead:

1. Walk alongside of your dog, with the treat in front of your dog giving the command "heel".

2. Slowly bend your knees and turn left and right, still allowing your dog to keep up and stay by your heel, also giving the command "heel" every time you changed direction.

3. Stay very calm while you do all of this and if the puppy gets distracted, put your hand under its collar and gently pull it back to the right position and carry on the exercise.

This exercise can be very tedious but it will be worth it and eventually you will be able to take your dog on a walk without the lead, only when he is quite a bit older though. I hope this helps!
