Getting To Know Your Dog

This is a vital part of your dogs life before any serious training starts coming in. Your dog is a pet, it needs to play, it need to have fun and it needs you to be its owner. You need to stay with your dog throughout its life and care for it, so it is best to start off on good grounds.

Learn your dogs behaviour, what he likes and dislikes, get a feeling for his personality. A dogs personality usually develops between three and twelve weeks of age, so it is probably best to take himhome with you at around eight weeks of age so that he gets accustomed to your household. When you take him home, he will be frightened and confused so do not expect him to start bouncing around your house and playing with you endlessly (unless you have an extremely lively dog). He will probably want to lay down for a bit and rest so take him to his basket and let him rest and leave him so he knows that that is his bed and his private space. After a while he will probably start looking around the house (this varies for most dogs) and find out new things. If there are restricted ares that you do not want him to go, start showing that now by either blocking it off or if you catch him walking towards it, quietly say no and give him a pat and block him or get him to follow you somewhere else.

As time moves on, you will realise that he is starting to run around and follow you and your family and friends and getting to know everybody. You should soon start reinforcing rules, like no jumping on the sofa or no begging when you are eating. I learnt a little tip that lets your dog know that you are the boss, always eat before him and let him watch you and see you eat first, never give him food from the table. After you have eaten and cleared up than you can feed him. He will then know that you are the master and the master gets his food first.

Small things like eating before him and only allowing him to go to certain places with you adds up and soon he will start picking up a routine and start to become more obedient.

I hope this helps you in the life long run with your new puppy.
