Teaching Your Dog To Come
Welcome to this short guide on how to teach your dog to come to you. Before you teach him anything else, he should know to come to you when you call him.
Start this exercise when your puppy is alert and hungry. Divide your puppy"s meal into ten equal portions, and throughout the day entice it to the food bowl by using his name and the command "come". Never reacall your puppy"s name to teach him a bit of discipline, he should come when you call him.
Now here is your quick three step guide on how to teach your dog to come to you:
1. Stand a short distance away from the puppy, in a quiet room with absolutely no distractions, a hallway is a reasonable solution. With a food treat visible in your hand, say your puppy"s name and as it begins to come forward, give the command "come".
2. As your puppy begins to move towards you, praise it by saying "good dog" with a bright and enthusiastic tone of voice. Encourage your dog to come stright towars you by bending your knees and opening your arms as a sort of welcome sign.
3. When your puppy approaches, kneel down to get to his level and praise your puppy again with words and stroking him and give him the food reward. In order to maintain the intrest of your dog, vary where you practise this exercise.
